Helping travelers explore the heart of Japan

Currently based in Matsumoto, Nagano Prefecture, I’ve led walking tours in central Japan since 2017. This includes tours stepping back in time on Kiso's historic Nakasendo Trail and encountering glimpses of the sacred on the Ontake Pilgrimage Trail. Nagano has been my home for 20 years, and my deep ties to the region give me a nuanced understanding of the land and its people. This sets the stage for an immersive exploration of Japan's rich cultural and natural heritage as I help visitors have the experience of a lifetime.

A Unique Perspective

My approach to guiding is informed by the cross-cultural outlook of my anthropology degree, extensive travels internationally and throughout Japan, and long familiarity with the local culture. Inspiration also comes from my years of Japan-related writing, ranging from in-depth travel content to short fiction and a novel. This diverse background allows me to craft stories and deliver tours that help connect travelers to the soul of Japan. At times this involves encounters with the land’s spiritual traditions, at times experiencing its storied landscapes, and at times delving into the mindful practice of shinrinyoku (forest bathing).

I specialize in immersive walking tours that bridge the traditional and the modern, placing the sights and landscapes we encounter along the way in a living context. Rather than a cookie-cutter approach, I do my best to personalize tours, ensuring a journey that is both interesting and meaningful. Much of Japan’s history and tradition are more than dusty relics, and visitors learn about the ways that the past still lives for people today. Travelers leave with a deeper appreciation of Japanese history and traditions, their intersection with modern life, and our interconnectedness with the natural world.

I’m a Japan based guide and permanent resident with years of industry experience working alongside travel industry partners, governmental organizations, and international media. My flexible guiding services can be tailored to meet the needs of your organization and clients.

I’ve also worked as a consultant on numerous government sponsored tourism projects in both Nagano and Hokkaido, and have developed walking tours for clients in the Suwa and Kiso regions. Currently, I’m working on new tours in the Matsumoto area.
